Flight of the Conchords is a show about two friends from New Zealand trying to wade their way in the music scene in New York. In real life, they are two friends from New Zealand trying to break in the music scene in New York. Using their real names in the show, Bret (Mackenzie) and Jemaine (Clement) live in a modest apartment in the Chinatown area of New York City. Their “career” is handled by a cultural attache of the New Zealand Consulate in New York named Murray Hewitt. Their only other “friends” are Dave, a pawn shop owner who’s their source for all things American, and Mel, their ONLY fan and stalker.
They would burst into novelty song in many parts of the show. They complement each other very well and their comedy is your scratch your head in frustration AND sheer amusement kind. They’re naturally funny by being themselves. They can be pretty stupid and clueless which make them more adorable. Their songs are as crazy! The words are simple but they’re outrageous and funny. Plus when the duo sings it with their own brand of deadpan/sad/dejected faces, you will find yourself laughing. Believe me. Here are bits from two of their crazy songs.
I’M NOT CRYING
I’m not crying
I’m not crying
It’s just been raining on my face
And if you think you see some tear tracks down my face
Please don’t tell my mates
I’m not crying
No, I’m not crying
And if I am crying
It’s not because of you
It’s because I’m thinking of a friend of mine who you don’t know who is dying
That’s right, DYING!
These aren’t tears of sadness because you’re leaving me
I’ve just been cutting onions
I’m making a lasagna
Oh, I’m not crying
There’s just a little bit of dust in my eye
That’s from the path that you made when you said your goodbye
I’m not weeping because you won’t be here to hold my hand
For your information there’s an inflammation in my tear gland
I’m not upset because you left me this way
My eyes are just a little sweaty today
Love is like a roll of tape
It’s real good for making two things one
But just like that roll of tape
Love sometimes breaks off before you were done
Another way that love is similar to tape
That I’ve noticed
Is sometimes it’s hard to see the end
You search on the roll
(search on the roll)
Search on the roll
With your fingernail
Again and again
And again and again
Brown paper, white paper
Stick it together with the tape
The tape of love
The sticky stuff
You can check out their songs at their official HBO website; there’s a .pdf of all the songs used in every episode, if you also want the lyrics. I also recommend Business Time. I once heard them sing it at a bar performance in youtube. I had no idea it’s wackier when used in the show.
I cannot help but see Bret’s resemblance with Dave Annable and Jesus Christ (!) and Jemaine with…Stephen King. Hahaha! Beyond that, they’re a class on their own and believe me, they would make you laugh. Little things will further amuse you – Murray’s roll call habit and the tourism posters the consulate made for New Zealand. Hilarious!
Lastly, I heart this shirt. I should have asked Raft3r to buy it for me a few weeks back when he was still shuttling to and from New York, and well, when he still has enough money, hehe. It says on the shirt Eat. Sleep. Folk. Nice.
I also love all the shirts that Bret wore in the show but I couldn’t find any for sale. I wonder if there’s also that Flight of the Conchords mousepads for sale. They were briefly shown by Murray in the show as items to beef up the pair’s career. It’s an animated picture of the two that’s simple yet cute. Anyway, I’ll look for ways to get this shirt and other items I might like.
Sadly, I have not heard if HBO is showing or has shown this show here. I hope they do. It’s something to keep you entertained. Let me know what you think of it.
