Friday Finds: Sabbath’s Theater

FRIDAY FINDS is a weekly meme hosted over at Should Be Reading.  It showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list… whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (They aren’t necessarily books you purchased).

The last two weeks have been utterly busy, busy, busy; and as you know, my auto-response to that is to walk to a bookstore.  From Cash & Carry’s very tiny Booksale branch I grabbed and paid a book with a predominantly red cover.  I was on my way home when I looked at it and saw it is Sabbath’s Theater by Philip Roth.  I didn’t have to look at the blurb.  I knew right then that it’s a steal for Php45.

Mickey Sabbath is its gargantuan hero. Once a scandalously inventive puppeteer, Sabbath at sixty-four is still defiantly antagonistic and exceedingly libidinous. But after the death of his long-time mistress—an erotic free spirit whose adulterous daring surpassed even his own—Sabbath embarks on a turbulent journey into his past. Bereft and grieving, besieged by the ghosts of those who loved and hated him most, he contrives a succession of farcical disasters that take him to the brink of madness and extinction.

“Either foreswear fucking others or the affair is over.”  That’s the very first line in the book.  Intriguing, coming from a mistress.  I hope to read it soon.  Not soon soon, but, well, you know what I mean. 🙂
